Kids Life Studio® Coach Academy
As a life coach for children, I often emphasise the importance of honesty in my family coaching sessions—but how do we help families truly internalise this value? I often use the example of the childhood game "Truth and Dare" to shed light on why it can sometimes be difficult to show up with authenticity and to stay grounded in integrity.
At first glance, *Truth and Dare* may seem like just a lighthearted game, full of giggles and challenges, but if we look deeper, we can see how it mirrors the challenges and rewards of telling the truth in real life. The “truth” part of the game is particularly significant because it forces players to confront the uncomfortable, the awkward, or the unknown about themselves and others. In a world where kids are constantly navigating new social pressures, "Truth and Dare" provides a safe space to practice vulnerability, build courage, and understand the value of transparency. However if not properly guided and supported, children can also sometimes leave the game with embarrassment, regret and shame.
The core lesson here is that truth-telling isn’t always easy. For children, especially, the fear of judgment, rejection, or conflict can make honesty feel risky. By coaching children to be truthful in smaller, everyday situations—like when they make a mistake, feel unsure, or disagree with a friend—we are helping them build a foundation of integrity that will serve them well throughout their lives.
When children are encouraged to tell the truth in non-judgmental spaces, like in our supportive coaching environment or even through playful activities such as *Truth and Dare*, they learn that their voice matters. They also learn that the truth, while it might not always be comfortable, is always more empowering than hiding behind lies, omissions, or avoidance. In this way, we help children understand that honesty isn’t just a moral rule, but a tool for personal strength, connection, and growth.
Interestingly, in the context of "Truth and Dare", the game also shows us the balance between truth and action. Just as children might shy away from sharing the truth, they might also hesitate to take on a daring challenge. But by guiding them through the discomfort of telling the truth or taking a risk, we’re preparing them for the bigger challenges ahead—when telling the truth might not be about sharing something playful, but standing up for what is right, owning up to mistakes, or facing tough consequences with honesty.
Coaching children to tell the truth is one of the most important gifts we can give them. It teaches them to trust themselves, strengthens their resilience, and helps them form deeper, more meaningful relationships with others. And, just like the game of "Truth and Dare", learning how to navigate both honesty and courage will prepare them for the more serious, life-altering moments when they will need to speak their truth with confidence.
Ultimately, the lesson we can take from *Truth and Dare* as Kids Life Coaches is that we also need to be telling our own truth. This is not only about being honest—it’s about each of us as role models to children, embracing the fullness of who we are, and having the courage to stand by that truth, no matter what. This is especially important when speaking up as a voice for children about the hard things that matter!
Thank you for all you do as a children's change maker! May you continue to speak your truth and show courage to walk in integrity so that children may follow you!
